Local Produce Comes to Tempe Bakeshop, TD Originals

One of the Valley’s most well-respected bakers, Tracy Dempsey, is opening up her Tempe bake shop & wine store to become a hub for fresh, locally grown fruits and vegetables. She is doing this by becoming a CSA pick-up spot for Sun Produce Cooperative. This means that each week, she’ll have a pre-packed bag of in-season, Arizona-grown produce for all who sign up for the program. A CSA, short for “Community Supported Agriculture” is a great way to support local farmers and lessen the distance that your food has to travel to get to your plate. In order to participate, you just need to sign up online, choose the amount of produce you’d like each week, and then pick up on the designated days.

Tracy Dempsey & her staff will also have plenty of sweet treats to offer, as well as fresh breads and croutons to supplement your produce!

Where does the produce come from?

The produce is grown and delivered by Sun Produce Cooperative. And while the name “Sun Produce” might be new to you, the people behind it have been around for quite awhile: we’re talking Farmer Frank from Crooked Sky, David & Sara from Blue Sky Organic Farms, overall-wearing Mark from Rhiba Farms, dog-loving Jana from Pinnacle Farms, and the famous Maya from Maya’s Farm (just to name a few).

Sun Produce Vice-President Dave Brady, of Bar-B-Produce, rounds up the summer watermelons for delivery to the Town of Gilbert.

Sun Produce Co-Op is a formal collaboration of these local farmers working together to aggregate produce from their small farms and sell it. Essentially, the farmers combine their resources and buying power to match our economy of scale. This creates a viable alternative revenue stream to keep them afloat, and of course bring local produce to those of us who desperately want it.

After growing and harvesting the produce, the Co-op combines it in coolers around Phoenix before delivering it in bulk to Tracy Dempsey Originals, where she and her staff weigh and split the produce into the CSA bags — so they’re ready to grab n’ go when you arrive. Sign up and pay here.
